The challenge

Esusu is seeking a Controller to lead our accounting organization. Reporting to the CFO and collaborating with executive leadership and department heads, this individual will significantly shape the company’s finance organization and serve as a key company-wide leader.

What you will help us deliver

  • Act as the trusted advisor to the CFO and company leadership on accounting matters.
  • Manage the accounting team, including performance coaching and growth management, and set team-level objectives and key results (OKRs).
  • Maintain the general ledger to ensure all material ledger accounts are reconciled monthly within 5 days after month-end.
  • Drive automation and efficiency initiatives within the function, maintaining our automation and tech-first culture.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Collaborate with FP&A to prepare monthly and quarterly reporting.
  • Lead the annual audit process, serving as the primary contact for independent auditors.
  • Foster a humble, smart, fun work environment that uplifts others.

Internal Control and Risk Management

  • Develop, where necessary, and maintain internal controls that emphasize segregation of duties and provide adequate checks and balances.
  • Maintain or implement where needed, best practices for financial document retention and storage.
  • Uphold rigorous ethical standards.

Tax Compliance

  • Manage and partner with Esusu’s outsourced tax partner to ensure:
    • Sales tax returns are properly completed and submitted quarterly.
    • Annual income tax returns are prepared and filed timely.
    • Optimization of the company’s R&D tax credit utilization in partnership with third-party tax service providers.

Team Growth and Coaching

  • Be a player-coach; set high standards for quality and motivation by demonstrating excellence in your own work.
  • Lead and mentor team members, conducting regular and formal performance reviews.

Non Profit

  • Serve as the lead accountant for an affiliated non-profit that works alongside Esusu to empower renters.
  • Report directly to the non-profit BOD on a monthly basis.
  • Ensure that the entity’s annual Form 990 is prepared and filed in a timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications

  • CPA license in one or more states.
  • 12+ years of experience with increasing levels of responsibility, accountability and team leadership.
  • 3-6 years of public accounting experience
  • Proficiency in Netsuite, FloQast, and ADP

Preferred Qualifications

  • An experienced leader who confidently manages a team independently.
  • A self-starter with a continuous learning mindset.
  • Strategic thinker who can wear many hats on the team with the ability to dive into details to ensure tasks are completed effectively.
  • Strong communicator, able to convey complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Skilled in using accounting software and financial management tools.
  • Adaptable to changing business environments and able to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
